Armstrong's Impact to Modern Society
After returning from the moon, Armstrong shied away from the public and, sadly, around 30 years after his expedition to the moon, Neil Alden Armstrong passed away on August 25,2012 at the age of 82 following competitions from cardiovascular procedures in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was survived by his second wife, Carol, and his two sons Mark and Erik from his first marriage. Many people throughout the country mourned over Armstrong's death. Speaking to the public, and the country, his family stated, "For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink." Due to his heroic actions throughout his life, President Barack Obama stated, "Neil was among the greatest of American heroes—not just of his time, but of all time." Buzz Aldrin, now 85, joined the public in mourning, stating, "I know I am joined by millions of others in mourning the passing of a true American hero and the best pilot I ever knew. My friend Neil took the small step but giant leap that changed the world and will forever be remembered as a landmark moment in human history."
Neil Armstrong is now among the greatest heroes of American history, and perhaps the world. Ever since his defining expedition to the moon, the United States has remained one of the world's top space powers. We've now advanced technology to the point that we're working on a mission to inhabit planets such as Mars. Neil Armstrong was watched by an estimated 600 million people from all over the world. He gave the finishing blow to the U.S.S.R. and practically finished the space race in this expedition alone. All over the world, people saw this act of heroism and were witnesses to a defining moment throughout human history.
